Initial thoughts on the TL's role

Defining the role of a teacher librarian is not as simple as it first seems. I suppose that the TLs role is one that is constantly changing due to what seems to be the impact of digital and electronic media. In particular, students of today are so immersed in technologies it is hard for adults to catch up to this explosion in digital technologies and electronic media. Therefore this must have important ramifications for the TLs role in schools. Will print resources become obsolete in school libraries. Some school administrations think so and see students learning via the Internet as a main source of information. However, in my 9 years experience as a secondary school teacher, I believe that some schools don't adequately teach information literacy skills. I'm sure there are many students who do not know how to conduct research using print resources in the library. From my own observations the TLs role is an isolated and independent one from the teaching and learning environment. The TL is in the library to show students where the books are, rather than collaboratively planning and delivering curriculum that enhances students' learning.
